Quinn Research Center Featured in Santa Monica Star
We’re grateful to the Santa Monica Star for featuring the Quinn Research Center in its September issue, with a new piece about the neighborhoods and places that shaped Santa Monica’s Black community. The story begins with Gilbert McCarroll’s grocery and soda fountain at 1729 Broadway — a small business that offered more than goods; it offered dignity, connection, and a place to belong. Michael Ano’s article uses Gilbert’s storefront to ask a question central to our work: what do we preserve — the building, the history, or the feeling those places held?
This article is the first in a series of interviews with Carolyne Edwards that will explore historic Broadway and the people, places, and memories that deserve to be remembered. We’ll share future installments as they publish and highlight items, photographs, and stories from our archives that connect to each piece.
